Allergies and Such

Well, the trip to the allergist was interesting to say the least. It turns out that one of her specialities is treating pregnant women who have asthma and allergies. I guess that's one advantage to living in a large, polluted city with one of the largest medical centers in the world. I have never been to an allergist. No one in my family has asthma and I always just treated my sinus headaches with over the counter whatever. They gave me a breathing test and when the doctor came in she told me: Someone your age, non-smoker who is not overweight should be in the 90th percentile, at least. You're an 82. Oops. I guess that little cough I always have (I call it the Houston cough) actually was something. I asked her if it could be because I was pregnant because I might as well blame it on the baby, right? She told me that while the diaphragm is squeezed, that does not affect lung flow. She told me to try not to use the Tylenol sinus because decongestants are not the best thing in your first two trimesters, hence the rising blood pressure. I walked out of there with TWO inhalers, one nasal spray and z.yrtec. Lord almighty! Do any of you guys have any experience with mild asthma, inhalers or anything like that?

Meanwhile, I feel the baby kicking more and more and it is pretty cool! We are leaving tomorrow for M.clean, VA to visit M's brother who just built a new house that I am dying to see. It will be nice to get a small break from the heat since it is still in the 90's here. Thank you global warming. If you haven't gone to see Leah, she has FANTASIC news! LJ got a great fertilization result from her retrieval and I hope those cells keep dividing!!!! Also, Baby Moxie is wearing the cutest green dress/blouse ever. I love it!

I do have very mild asthma, they called it "allergen induced", and I had an inhaler for a while. I tend to never have it when I need it, and it's usually just because I'm laughing too much (which causes coughing fits). And yay for the baby kicking! Isn't it the coolest feeling in the world?

Have a great trip! You'll be in my neck of the woods- and it looks like we'll have really great weather too!

Yup, mild asthma here. I mostly just get it with severe nasal allergies or when I get a really bad cold. Then I need the albuterol. When I worked on a farm for awhile, I needed a steriod preventative inhaler since I'm allergic to grasses. My son has the same deal, but for him they call it "reactive airway syndrome." I highly recommend the preventative steriod nasal sprays, they work great.

Good luck with the nasal stuff! Glad the pregnancy is sailing along!

Yay for trips! I'm excited that you get to go somewhere that has a season they call "autumn."

I hear the leaves change and everything. Awesome.

I'm so sorry to hear about this sudden condition. I hope that you start feeling better, but I completely get the allergy thing. Considering it is sweltering in this part of the country, the allergy problem is still relentless.

Enjoy the wonderful trip you have planned, and thank you for the comment about my outfit (it is a top). :)

I hope you had a wonderful birthday! I sent you something via snail mail, so let me know once you get it.

I hope your allergies clear up soon.

I have mild asthma (with known triggers such as cold, exertion during exercise, etc.), recurrent sinus infections (for which I'm on a steroid inhaler and will be until at least February 2008) and I'm borderline bronchitic. I have inhalers that I use when absolutely required but I don't like to use them because the medication gives me the shakes for an hour or two post-usage. But they do do the trick. So as long as they are safe for you and the baby, go for it. Nothing wrong with them.

I wanted to let you know that I'm still here, and still reading; just quieter than usual as I contemplate my own path. Thinking about you.

I have asthma, but thus far I haven't had any problems... inhalers make feel shaky.
Have a nice trip and I hope that you feel better soon.

I've used inhalers while pregnant, and not only are they safe, but it's safer to use the meds than go without.

You need oxygen, and so does the baby, and that 82% isn't just a number. Take your meds, and take care.

I'm new to your blog. I was once was diagnosed with asthma that got so bad it sent me to the emergency room twice. Once I moved out of an apartment, it completely went away. I hope it's temporary. Take care.
