Minnesota

After much consideration I have decided that I would like to move to Minnesota. I've heard that during the summer you can actually travel outdoors during the day. It seems too good to be true, but I am willing to take my chances. As H.ouston faces another beautiful 96 degree, 85% humidity day, I have to wonder if my son will ever get to have the same kind of childhood that my husband and I did. The grass is either full of fire ants or chemicals that get rid of fire ants. There are mosquitoes that can make you sick unless they spray the hell out of everything (which they do) which means that there are no fireflies. Should humans even live here???? Why in the HELL did they put N.ASA down here? Unless they plan on picking up and moving JSC, I will have to be content with our annual escapes to the Midwest. In the mean time, I am going to stay inside and sit in a bucket full of ice water.

This weekend I traveled to my hometown of A.ustin to receive a haircut from the Devine Miss M. When I drive to S.outh C.ongress I am always a little shocked to see it. This is not the A.ustin I grew up with. This part of town is beginning to look a little too much like L.A. There are super tan women walking down the sidewalk with big sunglasses in desperate need of a good meal. I even saw a celebrity walking down the street the last time I was there. I feel a little better, though, when I walk in and my hairdresser has a bleach blonde spikey hairdo and bright red lipstick. That is the A.ustin I grew up with. She cut off the majority of my hair and I like it, but it is odd reaching back and feeling nothing where my hair used to be. It's a cliche to go through a big life change and then get a new haircut, but I have to also blame the intense heat. The last time I cut my hair this short I just ended a five year relationship. I could get into a whole thing about the symbolism of cutting my hair, but I just wanted something a little cooler and a little easier to deal with. If I can't have Minnesota, then I can at least have new haircut, right?

I feel your pain! I'm in Dallas and it's miserable. I think that it is even too hot to go swimming, if that's possible.

Hi from icomleavwe.

For someone who does live in Minnesota year-round, I can tell you yes, summers are beautiful (except for the really steamy humid days). However, winters can be less than desirable, as unearthing the driveway (shoveling) does stink.

Hope it cools down.

Southern heat. Not being allowed outside without full body covering clothing, a very wide brimmed hat, and a full bottle of sunblock.

Versus ice cold winters, snow that doesn't stop, never mind the ice.

I like the southern heat myself! lol

On the other hand, I definitely feel your pain. Having just moved to the south from the northeast, I do miss that my kids will never wake up to a snow day, and then get to make snowmen and snow angels in a foot (or more) of snow.

Oh my gosh - did you see the downtown skyline?! Insane, isn't it? I waffle between excitement about all of the development and regret for what it's doing to the city. Sigh.

Nothing compares to Texas heat, but here are some good things about living in TX: The good thing is you don't have to shovel your car our if the snow in the morning in winter. Another good thing about living in Houston is right now the rest of the economy is in a pit but according to the news Houston is enjoying the oil success and biz and growth are booming. Maybe they will make an ice hotel so folks can stay cool.

I once lived in Houston for 2 years. My favorite part was showering, doing my hair, ironing my clothes, opening the front door and undoing everything I just the past hour doing. But, Houston does have the fattest raindrops in the world! How does that work?

Visiting for ICLW.

I don't know much about Minnesota or Texas, but I am a reader from way back and have been following along since Luke's birth. Seems like you're doing a great job!! How is WW going. I keep telling myself I need to sign up, but I just haven't gotten around to it. I've done it in the past and have found the meetings to be invaluable.

Here from ICLW. I can sympathize with the heat (partly) most people don't realize how hot and humid it is in my state this time of year. We have had 90s and high humidity every day for as long as I can remember (this summer that is). I would love to move somewhere more moderate!

Houston is the worst.. I don't blame you. It's rough in Dallas, but not nearly so bad. I enjoy the mild winters so much, though, I could never move!!! ;-)
I grew up here and all I remember during summers as a kid is going to the pool every single day... fun times!
Maybe you'll have some relief this week from "Dolly?"
*hugs*

I'm with you, I get my hair cut up to the nape every summer so it's not so heavy and hot.

Minnesota sounds like fine. I visited once for a weekend and really liked it. I don't plan on leaving New York anytime soon, but I definately see the appeal of the Minnesota lifestyle--and weather.

Hola from ICLW :)

I totally understand! I moved to North Carolina recently & the heat & humidity kills me! I'm from Arizona & would take 120 dry heat anyday!

Minnesota doesn't sound too bad...until I think about the snow in December! :)

Hello from Austin! Thanks for giving me a "hug"!

Just moved here from beautiful Boise, ID last September and I am glad I avoided the bad winter there. Am enjoying it here in the hill country and just stay indoors if the heat becomes unbearable. But basically we are enjoying outside by 7pm.

Have fun planning your relocation! (We got $25K in our pocket for planning ours instead of using all the company's suppliers.)

Coming from the land down under we're smack bang in the middle of winter here right now and it is FUHREEZING!!! Sydney usually experiences quite a mild winter in comparison to some of those snow shovelling states in your neck of the woods but this winter seems COLD, really COLD! Nothing to do but head south and hit the slopes for some skiing (which is what me and mine are doing next week)..
Happy summer

You sound like me when I complain about New Orleans in the summer - it really should be just a winter home!

I lived one or two states over from Minnesota for four years, and I do love Minnesota, I do. It is my favorite Midwestern state (although I am not opposed to Wisconsin, either). But the winters there... I love winter in general, I love snow--but I like being able to enjoy it outside instead of watching it from the window and listening to the wind billow, creating a windchill of -10. And that's what makes me hesitant about moving there. We've contemplated moving out of humidity-ridden Mid-Atlantic for years now, and Husband and I are in a constant Minneapolis vs. Denver battle. In the end, I think he will win.

I love Minnesota. I lived there for 8 years and I would move back in a heartbeat if I could.

The summers are very nice, but the mosquitoes are a real pain (they are the "state bird" of Minnesota). The humidity can be awful, too, but nothing like heat in TX.
