Up and Almost Running

*children mentioned with Photos*

We had to get a baby gate. Luke's crawling and determination to escape have gotten to be too much, so he is now trapped in his room. Don't feel too badly, though, his room is pretty cool. Already he is pulling himself up on the gate and I can just tell that his little mind is trying to figure out how to get that thing open.

This kind of change seems gradual to me. Luke grows every day, I know, but I don't always see it. My parents marvel at how much he changes from one visit to the next, but I only see it if I look back at old photos. When you are in the midst of change it is sometimes hard to see how quickly it is happening.

We like to take walks through our local park. In my continuing effort to become a somewhat decent photographer, I always bring my camera. My goal is to change the way I see the world. Good photographers take a scene that looks boring or mundane and make it worth examining. Places I used to walk by without a glance get a little more consideration.

Rules

Swings

I like my new found identity as a more visual person. For so long I was a musician only. I heard and that was all I needed to do. Now that I am seeing a little more of what's around me, I don't get the sense that life is passing me by as much as I used to. That is the kind of examination I hope I can give my child. With children, change may just be subtle, yet constant shifting of what is normal. I want to try to notice it more than I do now. Laundry can wait. Dishes can wait. Luke won't wait. He changes every day and I hope I remember to notice that and appreciate it a little more.

So precious...and oh, if we could remember to make that conscious effort to pay close attention every day.

I'm liking the photos, but being a visual person myself, of course it makes sense to me. I'm glad that the images are making you feel more present.

And Luke is absolutely adorable! Definitely worth dropping the dishes to appreciate.

"When you are in the midst of change it is sometimes hard to see how quickly it is happening."

If that is not the truest statement ever, than I don't know what is!!

I love the pictures! He's adorable! I really like the swing picture. There's just something about it. Great job!

I'm the very same way - stopping to smell the roses these days, and taking pictures all along the way - I cannot believe how quickly the last three years has gone since I had my first baby. Amazing. I wish everyone would slow down and stop rushing so much - you couldn't be more right - the dishes and laundry will wait - everything will wait - but our kids - our kids will not.

"Laundry can wait. Dishes can wait. Luke won't wait." So true. Words to live by.

Wow, he is such a sweet looking guy. Kids are wonderful at reminding you of how to stop and appreciate the small things in life.

He is so cute!! And this is odd... but I've noticed those blue and white floors on your flickr page... is that carpet?? I like it. :) Keep taking pictures- you're doing well!

Man, he is a CU-T-Pie! I just love that look on his face with the gate. He's so determined, and seems happy trying to figure the darn thing out.

Great pic of the swings, BTW. Great angle.

Great video! I can't believe he's standing so well! That's awesome.

I think I have to invest in a gate too... Today Sacha got into the garbage in my office!

And you're so so right about time and change.

I looked back at pictures from Halloween a year ago and I'm floored by how much bigger and OLDER they look now.

Baby jail!!! He looks so cute! Absolutely adorable. And for someone who's non-visual, your photog skills are formidable.

Thanks for letting me visit!

What a cutie-pie. I know what you mean about not seeing the change when you are living with it. I was making a family reunion video and was just marveling at how much my boys have changed in two years.

He is such a cutie. Make sure you hold on to all those moments and forget the little stuff. There's always going to be dishes, but he won't be discovering the world for the first time every day.

WOW, I so needed to read what you said today. Dishes can wait, laundry can wait... My husband is a musician and I only wish we would be a little more visual and notice the changes around him...
LUKE IS SO CUTE!!!!!!!!

Your photos look great and you sound like an amazing mom!

Wow. Love your pictures. You son is a doll. Oh, it's tough, the movement. My house must look like a prison to my kids, with the gates everywhere. The other day my son actually ran his sippy cup across the bars like he was in prison. Too funny!

Oh, and I'm tagging you! Details on my blog!

How sweet. It is funny how you don't notice it. My 11 year old daughter had to have grown 4 - 5 inches this summer & I didn't realize it until she went back to dance class in the fall. Girls that used to be taller then her were so much shorter all of a sudden. One of the girls seems so small now & just last year her mom gave me some clothes that she outgrew for my daughter!

Those photos are great. I got a new camera just a few weeks ago, and now I am trying my hardest to capture all kinds of moments. What you said about becoming more visual definitely hits home to me. Our own children are the perfect reason to inspire visual creativity.

Dear Kate, hi from Turkey, Izmir.
when i was surfing, i saw your blog and Luke by chance. Your son is very sweet, lovable and very clever like my son is Arda. The God give to them a long life.
When i saw your blog, i decided to prepare a blog for my son, like yours.
Have a nice day, see you again.
Yours sincerely.

we put up baby gates too - at the top and bottom of the stairs.

now our 11mo stands at the top of the stairs, rattling the gate and throwing his toys down the stairs and going 'uh oh' the whole time.

naughty little shit.
